So yesterday, while idling about home, the doorbell rings, and “who could that be?” goes over my mind. So I answer the door, and there stands a postman, carrying an long-ish box with Chinese hanji all over it. The word Erhu hits me instantly, along with that excitement which was long concealed. So I sign the paper that needs to be signed, grab the box, and rush back in. Grabbing the nearest knife I find, I cut open the box to discover the erhu case. Quickly that gets pulled out, and opened, inside lie the musical instrument I have long awaited, the Erhu.
First off I wasn’t expecting it to get it this soon, as I ordered it during the Chinese New Year, so I expected about a week delay on it’s estimated arrival date, which was February 7-11. Also being as I am, I’m always iffy, and somewhat untrusting when it comes to ordering things off the internet. So getting it, obviously relieved any worries I had.
So now, with the Erhu in my possession, what do I do? Well I try and figure out how to set up the thing… without the internet as for the moment, my home is lacking of such things… thing. The whole process took me a little over half-an-hour, not bad for not having a clue what to do right? Although it was until today that I discovered that I had the strings tuned a whole octave lower than they should be. But on the plus side I figured out how to play “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” on it, just by messing around with it. So I think I’m doing OK
for someone who’s never played a stringed instrument before… or rather someone who hasn’t learned how to play an instrument at all.
Now for those who don’t know what an Erhu is, it is a traditional Chinese Instrument, also referred to as a Chinese Violin. It has 2 strings, the inside string being tuned to D, and the inner string being tuned to A, just like the 2 middle strings on a Violin. I could
probably go on and describe the whole thing to you but, as we know “a picture is worth a thousand words”. But also you probably already saw it to your right… and yes the bow does go in between the two strings.
So for some time now, I will be “teaching myself” how to play this beautiful instrument.
If you’e interested in it, I recommend getting one here, as it’s where I got mine.
